MetaMetrix Lab Instructions
GHI uses several different MetaMetrix lab tests. Each test has different instructions to follow. The following are the most common tests:
GI Effects- This is a stool test that you perform at home. There is a lab slip in the plastic pouch on the top of the kit we give you. Please complete all your contact information in the Patient Information section (Section #3). Place the date you collected the specimen in Section #4, Test Information. Sign the back in Section #9, Patient Signature. You don’t need to complete Sections 5,6,7 or 8.
The GI Effects test consists of a single stool sample that you will send via FedEx in the prepaid mailer provided in the kit. Enclosed are instructions for collecting the stool specimen. There are three collection vials in the kit. Fill each to the line as instructed. Place your name, date of birth and date of collection on the label on each vial. Make sure that the cap is on as tight as you can turn it. Place the three vials in the plastic bag along with the absorbent pad; seal the bag; place it inside the GU Effects test kit box, then place the box in the FedEx mailer and take immediately to FedEx or call them for a pick-up. This is a prepaid, pre-addressed mailer. Do the test on Monday-Wednesday only to ensure that it does not sit over the weekend.
ION and Triad Tests- Both of these tests have two parts, a “Patient” part and a “Clinician” one. The Clinician instructions are for Quest, to perform the blood draw component of the test. The Patient instructions are for you to complete, as they relate to the urinalysis you will be performing at home.

Follow the instructions regarding collection of the urine specimen. The night prior to collection, place the 3 small gel paks (You will find these in the urine specimen plastic bag and the blood specimen hard plastic container), in the freezer. In the 24 hours before the test, reduce your intake of water to no more than three-8 ounce glasses. Before going to bed, empty your bladder. Then collect all urine during the night and the first void of the morning into a clean container. Using the pipette provided, place 12cc. of urine in the clear vial provided. Make sure the cap of the filled vial is tight after you collect the urine specimen. Next, freeze the vial containing the 12cc. of urine until you leave for your blood draw. Take the frozen urine and three gel paks with you to the lab in the test kit provided. Give the entire kit along with the FedEx mailer to the phlebotomist. They will take it from there.
